I am a great grandson on Henry Hall (Ben’s kid brother), son of Victor Hall and cousin of Peter Bradley. I clearly remember the night in the early 1950′s on which Vic realised his link with the Ben Hall side of the Hall clan (from an article in a “People” magazine). My sisters Rosemary Pye and Pamela Smyth were horified at the time but now Rosemary is an ardent follower of Peter’s excellent work on the story of Ben Hall. Well done Peter and I look forward to the publication of your new book. A few years ago I went to a gun show in Sydney where the late Edgar Penzig displayed a selection of photos and memorabilia entitled “Colonial Villians” and was surprised to see a photo of my great grandfather Henry Hall on display along with photos of Ben Hall and other bushrangers. I challenged Edgard about the inclusion of this photo in the display but he insisted that Henry Hall was indeed a “villian” with a police record, a claim I strongly dispute to this day.
Thanks Bruce,
Your recollections are similar to my own, except that I wasn’t aware of the Ben Hall connection until 2005, when I started researching the story and wrote the book to correct some of Edgar’s mistakes but also to balance the story.
Edgar was perhaps inclined to be a little too one-sided for most peoples tastes.
Rregarding Henry, (my own great grandfather) he most certainly did not have a police record. This is very well documented and I’m afraid Edgar is incorrect in this claim.
Best regards, PETER
Hi Peter,
Just wondering…i read that a young man by the name of Jack Dunleavy was in the gang…any info? I think he was an ancestor of mine..
Thanks
Fay
Hello Fay, sorry for the delay in replying; John Dunleavy rode with Ben Hall during mid 1864. He surrendered to the authorities in November and was subsequently sentenced to several years gaol.
Hi Peter,
I am wondering if Ben Hall had a sister, sister-in-law or cousin named Amy Hall (not sure if this was married or maiden name who was in the area of Maitland in the late 1840′s to late 1850′s. This lady appears on a few certificates as a witness along with a Margaret Cassidy. I have not been able to find much information on the other members of this family.
Thanks Kym
